While prospective members of NSAC do not need to have a sole focus on federal farm policy or a designated policy or grassroots staff member, members do need to be committed to engaging in our work to the best of their abilities. NSAC is dedicated to increasing the capacity of its member organizations so that they become more powerful and effective at bringing grassroots voices to bear on federal farm and food policy issues.<\/p>\n<p><em>NSAC is nonpartisan and all coalition work is conducted within the limits of section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"MsoNormal\">Benefits of Membership in NSAC<\/h2>\n<p>Membership means having an opportunity to build power together with grassroots groups nationwide and have our collective voice heard nationally and in Washington, DC. As an NSAC member you will have:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\">Timely information on the latest federal farm and food policy news and action opportunities.<\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\">The opportunity to develop and engage in policy development and grassroots education and campaign efforts with the coalition.<\/li>\n<li>An opportunity to be represented in Washington, DC by a team of dedicated and experienced policy analysts and grassroots advocates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">NSAC has three categories of membership:\u00a0 Represented, Participating, and Ally. <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainableagriculture.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/NSAC-Membership-\u2013-Chart-of-Different-Membership-Levels.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Download this comparison chart<\/a> to help determine the difference between membership levels and gauge which level is a fit for your organization. <strong>Membership is by application.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Steps to Becoming an NSAC Member<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><em>We take care in our membership process to ensure membership is a mutual fit! As a working, member-led coalition, our process involves thoughtful conversations and transparency about our work and what membership looks like.<\/em><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Submit a <em>Member Inquiry<\/em> through <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLScz3nFrCL7d4oX7cvXeMMN3XYOeoZNGnXmBO7jKEPLNt-aNfQ\/viewform?usp=sf_link\">this form.<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>****This form is not an application!****<\/strong> From here, if you are eligible to apply, an NSAC staff member will contact you to schedule a time to discuss your membership interest &#8212; please allow up to six weeks for us to reach out.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After connecting, if eligible, NSAC staff will send you a copy of the membership application for you to complete.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Applications will be processed according to the below<\/span><b> timeline<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> based on the date your application (not member inquiry) is received. <em><strong>Please note &#8211; a member inquiry is not the same as the member application,<\/strong> <strong>which is sent to prospective members by an NSAC staff member after we\u2019ve had a chance to connect with you about your membership interest.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once your application is received it will be reviewed by our staff, NSAC member organizations in your state or region of operation, and NSAC\u2019s Organizational Council, in addition to NSAC&#8217;s Policy Council for Represented Member applications only.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Timeline for Membership Consideration<\/h2>\n<p>Applications are welcomed on a rolling basis and considered approximately 6 times per year at Organizational Council meetings. It can take 6-24 weeks for the process depending on when an application is reviewed and the timing of upcoming review windows.<\/p>\n<h2>Membership Levels and Requirements<\/h2>\n<p>All NSAC members must:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Have a major commitment to sustainable agriculture and food systems.<\/li>\n<li>Work with, or act in support of, farmers or ranchers in some manner.<\/li>\n<li>Distribute and respond to grassroots action alerts relevant to their constituency, or commit to working to develop the capacity to do so (unless prohibited from doing so by internal rules).<\/li>\n<li>Attend NSAC gatherings to the best of their ability.<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrate good will toward other member organizations and be willing to work out differences.<\/li>\n<li>Affiliate with a regional Sustainable Agriculture Working Group or some other regional Affiliated Regional Program if appropriate for the organization.<\/li>\n<li>Pay NSAC annual membership dues.<\/li>\n<li>Place a link to NSAC\u2019s website on their website, and have their website linked on NSAC\u2019s website.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Represented Members<\/h3>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>Represented Members<\/strong> are represented by NSAC before Congress and other government agencies on Capitol Hill and are listed on all NSAC communications to federal policymakers and the general public.\u00a0 Represented Members each have one seat on the NSAC Policy Council and participate in at least one NSAC Issue Committee. \u00a0Represented Members also help elect the NSAC Organizational Council.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">In addition to the requirements listed above, in order to be approved as a Represented Member of NSAC, the prospective member must:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Be a non-profit, non-governmental organization (and not a multi-organization coalition, network, or alliance, unless approved by the Organizational Council) and approved by a two-thirds majority of the Policy Council.<\/li>\n<li>Be in substantial agreement with existing policy positions of NSAC.<\/li>\n<li>Be willing to have its name listed as a member organization on written and oral policy communications to Congress and the Administration and to be recognized as being represented by NSAC staff on NSAC issues.<\/li>\n<li>Have at least one representative who participates regularly in at least one Issue Committee.<\/li>\n<li>Designate an organizational representative to the Policy Council.<\/li>\n<li>If required by the Organizational Council, enter into a memorandum of understanding (\u201cMOU\u201d) with NSAC regarding direct and grassroots advocacy to ensure maximum coordination and to minimize potential conflicts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Participating Members<\/h3>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>Participating Members <\/strong>are members who prefer to not be represented by NSAC before Congress, but who wish to participate in NSAC gatherings, NSAC Issue Committees, and other NSAC activities.\u00a0 Participating Members may also serve on the Organizational Council and the Grassroots Council.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">In addition to the requirements listed above, in order to be approved as a Participating Member of NSAC, the prospective member must:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Be a non-profit organization, for-profit business or organization, or a public or academic entity.<\/li>\n<li>Be entitled to sign onto particular advocacy documents (sign-on letters, policy option papers, etc.) on an ad hoc basis as such opportunities may occasionally arise.<\/li>\n<li>Participate in one or more Issue Committees.<\/li>\n<li>Be entitled to vote in Organizational Council elections.<\/li>\n<li>Be entitled to participate in discussions about policies and priorities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Ally Members<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Ally Members<\/strong>\u00a0are members who are committed to sustainable agriculture and food systems but engage in federal policy in a limited capacity, or overlap with a limited number of policies that NSAC works on. Ally Members do not regularly participate in NSAC Issue Committees but support NSAC grassroots efforts and help groundtruth the coalition\u2019s work.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">In addition to the requirements listed above, in order to be approved as an NSAC Ally Member, the prospective member shall:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Have a major commitment to sustainable agriculture and food systems.<\/li>\n<li>Work directly with, or in support of farmers or ranchers<\/li>\n<li>Be a non-profit organization, for-profit business or organization, or a public or academic entity.<\/li>\n<li>Be entitled to sign onto particular advocacy documents (sign-on letters, policy option papers, etc.) on an ad hoc basis as such opportunities may occasionally arise.<\/li>\n<li>Participate via regularly scheduled conference calls and other forms of communications and dialogue designed expressly for allies.<\/li>\n<li>Pay the NSAC annual allied organization dues as established by the Organizational Council.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Affiliated Regional Programs<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Regional sustainable agriculture coalitions, including but not limited to the regional Sustainable Agriculture Working Groups, may join NSAC as regional programs to facilitate the interaction between their regional program and NSAC with respect to policy development, education, and outreach activities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Interested in Joining NSAC?
