Dear Supporter,<\/p>\n

Guess what?\u00a0 Last week, the Senate heard from us \u2013 and they listened!\u00a0 Because of calls from grassroots advocates like you, the Senate passed an amendment \u2013 the Durbin-Coburn amendment \u2013 that takes a bold first step towards reforming ballooning crop insurance subsidies for wealthy mega-farms in the 2013 Farm Bill!<\/p>\n

Calls from constituents helped encourage 59 Senators to support this common-sense, long overdue amendment.\u00a0 Even better, it will save taxpayers over 1.3 billion dollars and will ensure maximum support goes only to those who need it, not a handful of mega-farms.<\/p>\n

Grassroots action worked last week, but we can\u2019t stop there.\u00a0 <\/b>We\u2019ll need your voice over the next few weeks more than ever \u2013 making calls and spreading the word about other amendments that make a real difference in the lives of farmers and invest in local communities.<\/p>\n

Can you make a call today to support beginning and historically underserved farmers in the 2013 Farm Bill?<\/b><\/p>\n

Senators Bob Casey (D-PA) and Tom Harkin (D-IA) introduced amendment #986 that will help farmers better access their #1 biggest need \u2013 financial capital to launch and sustain their farm businesses.\u00a0 It authorizes a microloan program tailored for the needs of beginning and military veteran farmers and ranchers.\u00a0 And Senator Tom Udall\u2019s (D-NM) amendment #1055 restores funding to a historic program \u2013 the Outreach and Technical Assistance for Socially Disadvantaged Farmers Program (also known as Section 2501) – that assists our nation\u2019s historically underserved farmers.\u00a0 Senator Udall\u2019s amendment funds this critical program that provides training and technical assistance to African-American, American-Indian, Asian-American, and Latino farmers and ranchers.<\/p>\n

We need YOU to call today!<\/b><\/p>\n

Calling is easy!\u00a0 Just call (202) 224-3121 and ask to be connected with your Senator\u2019s office.\u00a0 Once you\u2019re connected to your Senator\u2019s office, leave a message like this one below with the person who answers the phone:<\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cHello, my name is ___ and I\u2019m a constituent and a voter (and tell \u2018em if you\u2019re a farmer!).\u00a0 I would like to leave a message for Senator ___\u2019s agriculture staffer.\u00a0 Can you take a message for me, please?\u00a0 The message is:\u00a0 I urge the Senator to support SA 986 and SA 1055 in the 2013 Farm Bill floor debate.\u00a0 These amendments are critical to investing in our next generation of farmers.\u00a0 Thank you.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

And there\u2019s much more at stake \u2013 check out NSAC\u2019s Take Action page<\/a> for a list of amendments that haven\u2019t been voted on yet.\u00a0 They still have a chance to pass when the Senate returns to work on the farm bill, so it\u2019s not too late to make a call!<\/p>\n
