{"id":27467,"date":"2013-10-24T13:18:04","date_gmt":"2013-10-24T17:18:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sustainableagriculture.net\/?p=27467"},"modified":"2014-04-09T11:22:21","modified_gmt":"2014-04-09T15:22:21","slug":"alert-stand-up-for-your-farmer-stand-up-for-your-food","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sustainableagriculture.net\/blog\/alert-stand-up-for-your-farmer-stand-up-for-your-food\/","title":{"rendered":"Alert: Stand up for your farmer, stand up for your food"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>All across the country today, communities are celebrating Food Day 2013, a day to support and celebrate healthy, affordable, and sustainable food.<\/p>\n<p><b>But much of the progress we\u2019re making towards a better food and farm system is being threatened by the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) regulations<\/b> \u2013 new rules currently proposed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that could make <b>sustainable agriculture and local food collateral damage<\/b> if we don\u2019t take action.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone wants safe food, but we need to speak up to save sustainable food systems threatened by costly new food safety regulations tailored for industrial food production.<\/p>\n<p>If we don\u2019t fix these draft rules:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>It will be harder for children, schools, and families to get fresh, healthy produce from farmers that use sustainable practices,<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>The high costs of compliance will deter beginning farmers from starting to farm, and could put farmers and food entrepreneurs out of business, <\/b>and<\/li>\n<li><b>Farmers will be less able to use sustainable and organic practices on their farms.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you haven\u2019t spoken out against these industrial food rules yet, make this day of celebration a day of action!<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re asking the FDA to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Allow farmers to use sustainable farming practices, including those already allowed and encouraged by existing federal organic standards and conservation programs,<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Ensure that diversified <\/b><b>and innovative farms, particularly those pioneering models for increased access to healthy, local foods, continue to grow and thrive without being stifled, and<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Provide options that treat family farms fairly, with due process and without excessive costs.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We\u2019re glad so many have come together today to celebrate sustainable food. Now it\u2019s time to fight. <b>We need everyone speaking out to ensure that these new FDA rules don&#8217;t trample on sustainable and organic agriculture, local food, and conservation, <\/b>and there are three critical steps you can take today:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>Get Informed<\/b> \u2013 Our <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainableagriculture.net\/fsma\/\">FSMA Action Center<\/a> has detailed issue pages on <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainableagriculture.net\/fsma\/learn-about-the-issues\/\">core FSMA issues<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainableagriculture.net\/fsma\/who-is-affected\/\">guidance for farmers and businesses<\/a> on determining how they may be affected by the rules.<\/li>\n<li><b>Take Action<\/b> \u2013 Got 2 minutes? <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/FSMA-action\">Start by signing NSAC and Farm Aid&#8217;s FSMA petition!<\/a> Next &#8211; the single most effective action you can take is to submit a comment to the FDA.
