Farmers and eaters are worried that the rules will:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i>put many farms out of business;<br \/>\n<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i> reduce the supply of fresh, local produce in schools and hospitals;<br \/>\n<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i> push farmers to tear out wildlife habitat; and<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>increase the use of chemicals rather than natural fertilizers.<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The good news is that we\u2019ve got a chance to fix this &#8211; the Food and Drug Administration is asking for comments from people like YOU before the rules become final law!\u00a0 But the comment period closes at <b>11:59pm <del>this Friday, November 15<\/del> next Friday, November 22.<\/b> We\u2019re running out of time to have an impact on what these rules look like &#8211; so don\u2019t delay. <b>Submit a comment to fix FSMA today.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Here\u2019s how:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>1. Get informed. If you\u2019re new to this issue &#8211; or just feeling iffy on some of the details &#8211; we\u2019ve got you covered. Read our <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainableagriculture.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/2013-FSMA-Fact-Sheet-Top-10-issues-for-farmers.pdf\">Top 10 Problems with FSMA<\/a>, or check out our issue pages for some of the real <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainableagriculture.net\/fsma\/learn-about-the-issues\/\">nitty gritty<\/a>. Farmers and food entrepreneurs should check out our \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/sustainableagriculture.net\/fsma\/who-is-affected\/\">am I affected?<\/a>\u201d information too.<br \/>\n<b><br \/>\n2. Take action.<\/b> OK, here\u2019s the deal &#8211; submitting a comment takes a little longer than simply sending a form email. But FDA will read every single submission, and it takes only a few moments! We\u2019ve put together templates for <a href=\"http:\/\/salsa.wiredforchange.com\/o\/5735\/p\/salsa\/web\/common\/public\/content?content_item_KEY=9861#farmers\">farmers<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/salsa.wiredforchange.com\/o\/5735\/p\/salsa\/web\/common\/public\/content?content_item_KEY=9861#consumers\">consumers<\/a> to help you customize your comment. Basically, in as few or many words as you like, you&#8217;ll want to share your concerns about the rules. You have a story to tell &#8211; about your food business, favorite farmer, or the role that local produce plays in your community &#8211; and it\u2019s critical to share it with the FDA so they understand how many people from across the country are taking note of these rules and demanding that they work for sustainable agriculture!<\/p>\n<p><b>3. Be sure to submit (or postmark) your comment by the deadline: <del>November 15<\/del> November 22, 2013. <\/b>There are two ways to submit:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Electronically.<\/b> Submit one copy of your comments to the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/fsma-pr\">Produce Rule<\/a> and one to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.regulations.gov\/#%21documentDetail;D=FDA-2011-N-0920-0188\">Preventive Controls Rule<\/a>.
